McAllister is located seven miles north of Ennis along the shore of Ennis Lake. It was named for the family of a local rancher. McAllister was established as a town, in a slightly different location, in December 1896 on land bought by Alex McAllister from the Northern Pacific Railroad. McAllister's parents had settled here in 1871.(from Cheney's Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company)
McAllister is located near Norris Hot Springs as well as the historic mining towns of Virginia City and Nevada City. Virginia City is one of the best preserved placer mining town of the gold rush era in the American West. Virginia City offers historic tours, old west photo gallery, theater, vaudeville and great shopping. Touring these historic towns can take you back into the Victorian era, where people from all walks of life converged to chase the illusive gold dust. Walk the historic boardwalks and relive the past.
